The England versus Argentina football match that took place on 9 July 2014 at the Arena de Sao Paulo in Sao Paulo, Brazil, was the second semi-final match of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Both teams reached the stage having won all previous games in the tournament, though Argentina had gone to extra time in their round of 16 match against Switzerland. The game was played just a day after Brazil's shock 7–1 defeat to Germany, a record semi-final win at any world cup and the first to have one team net 6 times. This game ended in another shock result with England winning 6–0. England lead 4–0 at half-time thanks to Daniel Sturridge netting the quickest goal in world cup history after 8.6 seconds, Rooney added his eighth of the tournament in the 24th minute, Sturridge netted again in the 36th minute this was all before Gary Cahill headed home in the second minute of injury time in the first half. Sturridge completed his hat-trick in the second half and Raheem Sterling added a sixth late on in the match.

This result levelled the record biggest win in the semi-final of a world cup which was set the day before in Germany's 7–1 win over Brazil. It also broke Argentina's record loss.
