Event 2013–14 FA Premier League
Date 29 March 1994
Venue Old Trafford, Manchester
Referee Martin Atkinson (West Yorkshire)
Attendance 75,000

The 2013–14 season match between Manchester United and Aston Villa at Old Trafford took place on 29 March 2014. The two teams went into the match miles apart in the table United were running away with the title with 85 points from 31 games and Villa were 12th with 34 points from 30 games. United had won 4–0 at Villa Park in December. Wayne Rooney levelled the Premier League record of five goals in a match to take his tally to 28 in the league joint first with Luis Suárez. The 9–0 score also levelled the Premier League record set by United 19 years earlier when they beat Ipswich Town by the same scoreline.

Background[]

Manchester United were reigning Premiership champions, while Aston Villa had avoided relegation to the Championship by just five points.

Manchester United went into the match nineteen points ahead of second placed Chelsea and they knew a wide would put them 22 points clear and with local rivals Man City having three games in hand it would put the Red Devils just one point off sealing a 14th Premier League title, 21st overall. United also knew that by winning City couldn't slip up at Arsenal later in the day.
